The white elephant gifts people fight over are the ones everybody can use: a soft throw, a mug warmer, a good candle, a cozy puzzle, a box of cocoa. They are not jokes. They are small cozy things that feel like a real win when you unwrap them, and that is why they get stolen. Most gift lists put the usual cap at $20 to $30, so every one of the thirteen picks below came in under $30 when we checked, and most would fit a smaller one. Pick one, wrap it plain and watch the room.

What is the most stolen white elephant gift?
A throw blanket, by the lists we read. Elfster’s guide puts a quality fleece, sherpa or woven throw first among the most stolen gifts, along with a phone charger and a coffee or tea set. A mug warmer, a candle and a cocoa set follow. The pattern is simple: something soft and plain in color, with no logo and no joke.
What are good white elephant gifts under $25?
Most of the picks above. The throw, the mug warmer, the cocoa, the puzzle, the waffle maker, the hand warmers and the game all fit. We held every product to a $25 cap with a 15 percent margin and checked it on October 21, 2026. Our guide to cozy gifts for her under $50 and 9 stocking stuffers for women under $20 have more at a smaller cost.
What is a good white elephant gift for ladies?
Something she can use at home. A throw, a pair of slippers, a neck wrap, a candle, a tea sampler or a mug warmer all work, and so does a cocoa set. Skip anything sized, strongly scented or tied to a hobby she may not share. See our self care gift basket ideas and candle gift sets and baskets under $50 for a bigger version.
What are funny white elephant gifts that are still useful?
The woodland bag clips, the card game and the mini waffle maker. A novelty item like a pizza cutter shaped like a saw gets a laugh and then ends up in a drawer, which is a waste of $20. A funny gift that gets used is a gift people steal. Pair one funny gift with a cozy one in the same exchange and people will argue about both.
How does a white elephant gift exchange work?
Everyone brings one wrapped gift, and nobody knows who brought what. Players draw numbers. On your turn you open a new gift or steal one that has been opened. Most groups cap the steals at two or three per gift, and then the gift is frozen with its owner. The last player often gets to swap with anyone. Agree on the price cap and the steal limit before the party, because that is where the arguments start.
How do you wrap a white elephant gift?
Wrap it plain so nobody can guess who brought it. Red and white Christmas paper, a green ribbon and no tag. Use a bag for soft gifts like the throw. Make the box a normal size, because a tiny box looks like a joke and a huge one looks like a trick. If you want to add a tiny extra, tuck a cocoa packet in the ribbon, the way you would add a candy cane to a Christmas stocking. Anything food or drink related should be sealed.
What should you not bring to a white elephant?
A few things to skip.
- A gag gift that cannot be used, because people only steal what they want.
- Anything personalized, since it cannot be passed on.
- Strongly scented items, which some guests cannot use.
- Wine or other alcohol, unless the group has agreed to it, since a child or a guest who does not drink may be at the table.
- Something sized, such as clothing.
- A gift that costs far more than the cap.
If you are unsure, bring the throw.
