November in the home and garden

This is the short list for November 2026: what to plant, what to bring inside, what to make and what to light, with Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 26 and Christmas close behind.

Outdoor timing depends on where you live. Two gardens in the same zone can see their first frost weeks apart, so the jobs below are timed from your own frost date and the weather forecast. Look yours up before you dig or move pots.

Each job takes a few minutes or an afternoon, and most link to a page with the full how-to. Pick two or three. Nobody needs to do all of them.

Bring inside

Bring things in by your own frost date and the forecast.

  • Move tender pots in before your first frost

Start about two weeks before your average first fall frost. If that date has passed, go by the forecast: bring portable pots in before sunset, pick what you still want, then water dry soil and cover what stays out all the way to the ground.

  • Bring potted rosemary in before your first hard frost

Rosemary usually lives through winter outdoors only in zones 8 and warmer. Anywhere colder, check the leaves for aphids and spider mites, then move the pot to a window with about 6 hours of sun before nights reach 28°F.

  • Give the Christmas cactus long nights

For flowers at Christmas, give it about six weeks of short days from mid-November: at least 12 hours of full darkness each night, with nights around 60 to 65°F. Once buds form, leave it in one spot away from heat vents and drafts.

  • Switch window boxes to cut greens

Ornamental kale and pansies ride out light frosts. Once hard frosts come night after night, fill the box with evergreen boughs, red twig dogwood and cones instead. A plant that is hardy in the ground can still die in an exposed box.
