Forest themed home decor looks grown up when the forest shows up as color and material instead of pictures of animals. Pick one green, a soft sage or a deep forest green, and one wood tone, then add a few plants, some fern prints and warm lamplight. That really is the whole look. Owls, mushroom lamps and word signs are what tip it into a kid’s room, so leave them out.
Below are four palettes with real paint colors, then 14 ideas sorted by room: the living room, the bedroom, the bathroom and the whole house. Forest themed bathroom ideas have their own small section, if that’s the room you came for.
What colors go with a forest themed living room
Every forest palette has three parts: a green, a soft neutral and a wood. The green can be light or dark. The neutral is a warm white, cream or linen, never a stark blue white. The wood does more work than people expect, because it’s what makes green look like a forest instead of a hospital wall.
Each paint name and number below was checked on the paint maker’s own color page on November 3, 2026.

| Palette | Paint colors | Wood | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fern and Oak | Benjamin Moore Saybrook Sage HC-114, Sherwin-Williams Clary Sage SW 6178, Sherwin-Williams Alabaster SW 7008 | Light oak, with brass | Rentals, small rooms, a hallway |
| Deep Woods | Sherwin-Williams Jasper SW 6216, Benjamin Moore Backwoods 469, Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee OC-45, Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore SW 7069 | Walnut | One living room wall, a den, a reading corner |
| Moss and Clay | Sherwin-Williams Oakmoss SW 6180, Benjamin Moore Tate Olive HC-112, Sherwin-Williams Cavern Clay SW 7701, Sherwin-Williams Natural Linen SW 9109 | Honey oak | A warm living room, a kitchen nook |
| Misty Pine | Benjamin Moore Wythe Blue HC-143, Sherwin-Williams Sea Salt SW 6204, Sherwin-Williams Stardew SW 9138, Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace OC-65 | Birch or white oak | A bedroom or a bathroom |
Fern and Oak is the light one. Saybrook Sage goes on the walls, Alabaster on the trim and ceiling, and Clary Sage on something smaller, like a door or a dresser. It keeps a small room open.
Deep Woods is the moody one. Jasper is so dark it reads almost black-green in a dim room, so give it a wall that gets real daylight. If that sounds like too much, Backwoods is a softer forest green. Swiss Coffee goes on the other walls, and Iron Ore is for a door or a bookcase.
Moss and Clay runs warm. Oakmoss is a deep olive and Tate Olive a lighter one. Cavern Clay is a terracotta, and honestly it’s nicer on a pot, a pillow or one cabinet than on a whole room. Natural Linen is the wall color that holds the rest together.
Misty Pine is the quiet one: Wythe Blue is a gray blue-green, Sea Salt a pale green-gray, Stardew a soft gray-blue, and Chantilly Lace a clean white for trim and tile.

How to decorate in a forest theme without it looking like a kids room
The difference between a grown up forest room and a nursery is almost always the objects, not the color. A deep green wall reads adult. A deep green wall with a cartoon fox decal does not.
A few rules keep it on the right side:
- Use botanicals, not characters. Fern studies, leaf prints, a moody forest photograph. No owls, deer cutouts, gnomes, mushroom lamps or signs that say anything about the woods.
- Let real wood do the talking. A smooth walnut or oak table says forest more than any decoration. Keep the wood smooth and well finished, not chippy or distressed.
- One pattern at a time. A fern print on two pillows is plenty. Pair it with solids: velvet, linen, chunky knit.
- Warm light, not fairy lights. Table lamps with fabric shades give that soft, filtered light. String lights pull it toward a teenager’s room fast.
- Leave space. An old interior design habit holds up here: a clear tabletop and a few bare inches on a shelf make the green and the wood look chosen instead of crowded.

Forest themed living room ideas
The living room is where this look starts for most people, and where it shows the most. Ideas 1 through 8 build the room in the before and after below.
1. Paint one wall deep forest green
One wall is enough. The wall behind the sofa is the usual choice, because the sofa and the art hang against it. Jasper or Backwoods from the Deep Woods palette both work. Keep the other walls a warm white like Swiss Coffee so the green looks deliberate.
2. Hang sage green curtains
Green curtains carry the color up the window without a paintbrush, which makes them the renter’s version of the green wall. Hang the rod high and wide so the panels frame the glass instead of covering it.
The OWENIE sage green faux linen curtains (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure. come as 2 panels, each 40 inches wide and 84 inches long, with a 3 inch rod pocket. They filter light but are not blackout curtains, so a bedroom may want a liner. $
3. Choose a real wood coffee table
The coffee table sits in the middle of the room and in the middle of every photo. Make it real wood, smooth and simple: walnut for Deep Woods, honey oak for Moss and Clay, light oak for Fern and Oak. Wood-look laminate tends to read flat next to a green wall. A wood tray on top gives the candles and books a home.
4. Put a tall tree in the corner
One tall tree does more than five small plants. It fills the dead corner beside a window and gives the room height. A faux olive tree is the easy route, since its soft gray-green leaves sit well with every palette here and it never drops leaves on the floor.
Two pieces work together for this:
- The VIVATREES 6 foot faux olive tree (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure. comes pre-assembled in a 9.45 inch white planter and weighs 12.5 pounds. $$
- An extra large seagrass plant basket with handles (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure. hides that white planter. It’s handmade natural seagrass, 13.8 inches tall, and each one comes out a little different. $
The indoor olive tree decor guide has more ways to style one, and if you’d rather have a living plant, tall plants for a living room sorts them by height.
5. Hang a set of fern or botanical prints
Three matching prints in a row over the sofa is the cleanest way to bring the forest onto the wall. Matching frames matter more than matching art. Pale wood or thin black frames both work.
The Drsoum botanical canvas prints (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure. are a set of four 8 by 10 inch green leaf prints in neutral frames, ready to hang. They show eucalyptus and leaves, not ferns, but they sit in the same quiet green. $
6. Layer green pillows and a knit throw
Pillows and a throw are the cheapest way to make a cream sofa look forest. Mix two textures: something smooth like velvet and something with pattern like a fern print. Add one rust or terracotta pillow in the middle so all that green has something warm to play against.
Pick from these, pillows first, then one throw:
- MIULEE moss green velvet pillow covers (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure., two 18 by 18 inch covers in polyester velvet. The solid color. Inserts not included. $
- Sage green fern leaf pillow covers (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure., two 18 by 18 inch covers, printed on both sides. The pattern. Covers only. $
- L’AGRATY olive green chunky knit throw (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure., handmade chenille chunky knit, 50 by 60 inches. The softer, heavier texture. $
- Aormenzy forest green cable knit throw (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure., 100% acrylic cable knit, 50 by 60 inches. A deeper green and a flatter, sweater-style knit, and the lower cost of the two throws. $
7. Bring moss and eucalyptus to the coffee table
A small bowl of moss and a few stems of eucalyptus in a green glass vase is the forest floor, done the grown up way. SuperMoss preserved forest moss (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure. comes in an 8 ounce bag in a fresh green, enough for a bowl and the tops of a couple of pots. Preserved moss needs no water, so keep it dry. $
8. Light it with lamps, not the ceiling light
A forest room looks best in pools of soft light. Put a table lamp with a fabric shade on a side table, and another on a shelf or a dresser if you have one. Use bulbs marked 2700K, which is warm white, and leave the overhead light off in the evening. A green wall that looks flat at noon looks deep and cozy by lamplight.

Forest themed bedroom ideas for adults
A forest bedroom should feel like waking up in a cabin with good sheets, not like a camp. Misty Pine and Fern and Oak are the calmer palettes for it.

9. Layer green bedding over cream
Start with cream or white sheets, then add green in layers: a sage duvet, a moss or olive throw at the foot, and two pillows in a darker green. Three greens that don’t quite match look more like a forest than one green repeated. The olive throw from the living room list works at the foot of a bed too.
10. Add a wood headboard or wood nightstands
Wood near the bed is what keeps green bedding from feeling cold. A plain oak or walnut headboard does it, and so do two wood nightstands if you’d rather keep your upholstered bed. Smooth, simple shapes look current. Log and twig furniture pulls it toward a hunting lodge.
11. Hang one big forest print over the bed
One large print over the bed is calmer than a gallery wall in a bedroom. A misty forest photograph or a single large fern study, framed simply, is enough. Hang it so the bottom of the frame sits several inches above the headboard.
Forest themed bathroom ideas
A bathroom is the easiest room to make forest themed, because it’s small and most of the look comes from things you can hang or fold. Misty Pine is the natural palette here: Sea Salt or Wythe Blue on the walls, Chantilly Lace on the trim.
12. Hang a fern shower curtain with green towels
The shower curtain is the biggest piece of fabric in a bathroom, so let it carry the fern pattern. Then keep everything else plain: solid sage or forest green towels and a wood bath mat.
The PAOPOED botanical fern shower curtain (opens Amazon in a new tab)As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. Full disclosure. is 72 by 72 inches in a water-repellent polyester, with deep green fern leaves and a gold accent print. It comes with 12 hooks. It’s semi-sheer, so it looks lighter than a solid curtain. $
13. Add a plant that likes humidity
A bathroom with a bright window is a good spot for a fern, because ferns like the moist air from the shower. A Boston fern on a plant stand or a hook near the window makes the whole room feel green. If your bathroom has no window, read plants for a bathroom with no window first, because most plants need more light than a dark bathroom gives.
Forest decor for the whole house
14. Repeat one wood tone and one green in every room
The thing that makes a whole house feel forest themed is repetition, not more decorations. Pick one green and one wood and let them show up in each room: the green as a wall in the living room, as bedding upstairs, as towels in the bathroom; the wood as a coffee table, a headboard, a bath mat. Walking from room to room, you feel the same woods without seeing a single theme decoration.
Texture helps. Linen, wool, seagrass and stoneware feel like the outdoors in your hands, and 3 earthy textures that make an apartment feel like home covers how to use them. Keep it adult in every room, too. One cartoon fox or a plastic vine over the doorway undoes a lot of good work.
Forest themed decor for a small apartment
In a small apartment, go light and let the green live in the things you own, not on every wall:
- Pick a light palette. Fern and Oak or Misty Pine keeps a small room open. If you love dark green, use it on one small wall or a door.
- Put the green in fabric. Sage curtains, two green pillows and a knit throw change a room in an afternoon, and they move with you when you leave.
- Go up instead of out. One tall tree in a corner takes less floor than a cluster of small pots and gives the room height.
- Keep the wood small and real: a wood tray, a stool, a picture ledge. Big rustic furniture crowds a small room.
- Lean art on a shelf or picture ledge instead of hanging it. Fewer holes in a rental wall.
What to buy
Start with what changes the most for the least. If you buy only one thing, make it a green throw for the sofa. Cost: $ is the least, $$$ the most.

FAQ
Is forest decor the same as jungle decor?
No. Jungle decor leans tropical: big glossy leaves like monstera and banana, palm prints, rattan and brighter greens. Forest decor is cooler and quieter: ferns, olive and moss greens, oak and walnut, wool and linen. You can borrow a plant or two from either, but the palettes are different.
Does forest green go with a gray couch?
Yes. Gray is a cool neutral and forest green sits well beside it. Warm the pair up with a wood coffee table and one rust or terracotta pillow, or the room can feel chilly.
Can I do a forest theme in a rental?
Yes. Everything in the living room list except the painted wall can leave with you: curtains, pillows, a throw, a tree in a basket, prints on a ledge and a rug. If your lease allows paint, one green wall is easy to paint back.
